Addressing the challenges of serious illnesses

Today’s family caregivers are navigating the high-risk environment of caring for a loved one with a life-limiting illness, completely unequipped with the right tools.

Each year, over 56.8 million individuals with such illnesses require palliative care to improve comfort and quality of life. Early palliative care reduces symptoms, minimizes re-hospitalization risks, and extends life. Sadly, only 14% receive it due to healthcare resource limitations, a need projected to grow 40% by 2040 due to an aging population and advanced illnesses.

Despite the WHO recognizing palliative care as a basic health right, global healthcare systems struggle to provide access, leaving family members to assume caregiving roles without sufficient training, resources, knowledge, or digital support.

Enter Pal, an expert in addressing the challenges of serious illnesses. Pal assists patients, family members, and healthcare providers by tackling core caregiving obstacles like care team collaboration, symptom tracking, and caregiver upskilling. By empowering family & friends to be better caregivers to their loved ones, Pal enhances care quality, elevates quality of life, and reduces the risk of complications and avoidable hospitalization.

The team behind Pal

Getting to know Nara Moripen, Azi Doost and the rest of the Pal team, we were impressed with their approach, attitude and drive, but most of all with their commitment to making Pal a real resource for those going through a difficult time. Nara, Pal’s CEO, lost her mom in November 2020, only a short year after a diagnosis of terminal cancer. When reflecting back on the time that she was caring for her mom, who was receiving palliative care, Nara realized the great flaws of this inequitable system.

Pal’s founding team has unique insights into the challenges of palliative care, and combined with Nara’s personal experience, will lead healthcare to new heights.

Why we are excited to invest

We are proud to invest in Pal and to contribute to their important mission. Palliative care is an area of healthcare that can be difficult and scary, and Pal's solution will help ease the burden on family, friends and other caregivers of palliative patients.
