New Investment: BioFeyn, Developing the Fish Feed of Tomorrow

By Katherine Moldow & John Mann Published on August 26, 2022

We're thrilled to share our investment in Biofeyn: a Boston-based startup pioneering a targeted and modular delivery mechanism for compounds and nutrients tailored to meet the critical needs of the aquaculture and adjacent food production industries.

Feeding growing populations, sustainably

We need to augment international food supplies in an economic and environmentally conscious manner to sustain our increasing global population, which is projected to hit 9.7B by 2050. Market experts state that farmed fish is a cheaper and more sustainable alternative to other livestock products. Complications around sustainable scaling include product supply chain disruptions, absorption issues, and pollution risks. Feed prices are likewise consistently higher than in other, more developed, industries.

Biofeyn, founded in 2019, developed a method of nanoencapsulation to deliver payloads. Payloads are the vital vitamins, minerals, and nutrients required by living organisms, which they call Feyns. Nanoencapsulation allows both feed producers and farmers to optimize the operation’s profitability, the health of their stock and subsequently the quality of the final market product. This method carries the dual benefit of satiating increasing consumer demands while addressing sustainability issues.
